The concept for this production was rooted in astrology and tarot cards, trading on the idea of fate and the star crossed lovers. It is quite possible to analyse all the characters and actions in the play by means of the astrological clues present in the text. The unit set consisted of solid black platforming and bridges sprinkled with stars in constellations and zodiac signs. Here we see the house of the Montagues S.R., represented by the tarot card King of Wands, and the house of the Capulets, S.L., represented by the King of Coins. Center stage is the Chorus, in this production a death-like personification of Fate, performing the prologue. Above the chorus are three projection screens showing more tarot cards. Currently invisible beneath the screens is an ornate table. During the show Fate sat at the table and turned tarot cards as the action unfolded, the turned cards with their meanings showing up on the screens. For example, as the scene begins in which Tybalt is slain, the cards appeared for Jealousy, Anger and Death. For the next scene in which Romeo kills Tybalt, the cards presented Remorse, Vengeance and Destruction. |
